The Forerunner 165 is Garmin's entry running watch and it is the one to give a new runner: accurate GPS for pace and distance, a bright touchscreen, heart rate, sleep and recovery scores, and training plans that adapt to the person, all with no monthly fee. The battery runs about eleven days of normal wear, which is the number that separates it from an Apple Watch.
It is the Christmas gift for a brother or sister who signed up for a first half marathon, the graduation present for someone who runs to think, and the gift for a husband or wife whose phone has been bouncing in an armband.
It pairs with the Garmin app on any phone and shows notifications. The band is standard and swappable. Under two hundred dollars for the watch that makes the running data make sense.
