Poisons like strychnine, cyanide and arsenic were often used in the 18th & 19th century to kill rats and other pests. The problem was that these poisons were so potent that then the family pet would scavenge the dead mouse or rat and fall dead themselves. It was a cycle that continued on far beyond the advent of the famous Mr. Yuck stickers, and has only been solved in modern times by formulating pest poisons based on the animals average body weight.

While the original quote about a drink taking a man might have originally been meant to describe the effects of severe alcoholism, it holds true for all manner of poisons.
